• Identify the main components of the profit & loss statement
• Understand the difference between gross profit & net profit
• Identify the difference between the trading account & the profit & loss account
• Understand the difference between cash and accruals accounting
• Be able to draw up a profit and loss statement and a trading and profit and loss account from a list of balances.
• Understand the main purposes of the balance sheet
• Identify the main components of the balance sheet
• Identify working capital and how to calculate it
• Be able to correctly classify balances under the correct headings of fixed assets, current assets, liabilities and capital
and the difference between fixed and current assets

• Understand the accounting equation
• To be able to prepare a cash flow statement
• Understand the fundamental differences between the profit & loss and cash flow statements
